First solo time trial of the year - a strong south-easterly wind makes for tough conditions on the M102B course!
For some unknown reason I was allocated number 20 for this race. Traditionally numbers ending in a zero are given to the fastest riders in the field. To me riders with a zero number are the big hitters and I'm certainly not one of them! I have once earned being placed on a zero, but this time I had a faster rider right behind me so wasn't likely to do justice to the "seeding".
The weather was not just windy but cold, just 5C. I collected my number from the HQ at East Hartford and then parked in Bassington Industrial Estate to be nearer to the start and finish so i could keep warm clothing on for my warm up. With a thermal base layer under my skinsuit plus gloves I got the clothing just about right for the race itself.
The starting stretch wasn't that fast, and turning right at Plessey Checks it became a slog into the wind. Turning at the Three Horseshoes the return leg didn't seem to be much better! Into the second lap and my head lost it when I was caught for a minute. My second lap was 1 mph slower than the first.
My time of 24:05 was well down on what I had hoped for, but a subsequent look at the other times showed me in 38th place out of 109 riders and not too far down on most of the people I should be competitive with. Clearly it was as much a slow day as a bad ride for me.
