Last year I under performed in the Barnesbury 25 and it was to be the same again this year.
A brisk south westerly wind made it slow off the start line but then gave a fast leg out to Woodhorn. I did my best to hold back to leave something for later in the race - averaging 247 watts was bang on my target, for an average speed of 27.2 mph.
Blocked slightly at Sandy Bay roundabout on the return, but otherwise power slightly down on the return leg, with 237 watts, but averaging just 22.9 mph, although that does include the horrible haul up to the Three Horseshoes roundabout that only has to be tackled on the first lap.
It all went wrong on the second lap, with power down to just 219 watts on the outward leg of lap 2, an average speed of 27.3 mph indicating a rising wind that would hurt on the last leg. Reaching Sandy Bay roundabout for the second time I was completely blocked by 4 cars ahead of me and traffic on the roundabout. I must have lost 15-20 seconds as well as any momentum.
Adam Wild caught me for 9 minutes shortly after, on his way to setting a North East 25 record of 48:40. Meanwhile my power outputs never recovered and it was a struggle all the way to the line to record 59:35.
I have no idea what went wrong - my heart rate was good all race at 167 bpm, but the power just wasn't there.
