Last club time trial of the year: 23:49, best club 10 time since 1997.
Sitting in 4th place in the club Short Distance BAR, on an average of 24.922 mph, I had a number of objectives:
A 25 mph ride (under 24:00)
A 25 mph average speed for the BAR (23:56 or better)
Move up to 3rd place in the BAR (23:52 and for Russ and/or Dave not to improve their time)
The first two were entirely in my hands but it was a big ask to get under 23:52 and for Dave or Russ not to improve on their second counting 10.
It was very windy, a strong westerly, but I had ridden well in similar conditions 4 weeks previous and i was fired up for a good ride. I had found a good line through the first bend on the course in the last 10 and was optimistic I could find 1 second a mile to get a 23:52.
Conditions seemed fast off the start line and I set out as hard as I could - I had Kyle one minute in front of me and Russ one minute behind me so there was plenty of motivation. Got a clean line through the left turn at Kirkley Hall (caught on camera by Jack) and pushed hard on the uphills on the way to Ogle.
The sun was at an awkward angle, right in my eyes on the lane from ogle towards Belsay making it hard to see any potholes. When I finally got some shade from a hedgerow further up the lane I caught sight of Kyle ahead. I hadn't expected that and I doubted for some moments about whether it could be another rider.
Clear through the turns at Belsay where Charlotte was marshalling, and onto a very fast section on the main road. I had expected a strong tailwind all the way to the finish but that wasn't the case and at times it was hard work. Having worked so hard over the first 8 miles my motivation wavered slightly going up past the wagon at 27 mph, but knowing that is was only a few minutes to the finish kept me strong. I hadn't expected to be caught by number 31 for 2 minutes, but it gave me another incentive to keep my speed up to the finish.
Delighted to record 23:49, but I fell short of moving up to 3rd on the BAR by 13 seconds. A 25 mph average for the short distance BAR is a good achievement and one I've only managed before in 1996 and 1997. Finishing 4th with such a high average makes me one of a select few to record 25 mph and not be in the first three overall.
