It was a disappointing turnout for the last club 25 of the season with just 11 riders signing on on what was a reasonably good evening for racing with a north northeasterly wind.
With recent success pushing over threshold on the hills and recovering down the other side, I decided to set out hard and see what happened! I soon had Martin in sight and set about reeling him in every time the road went upwards. Catching him on one of the uphills after about 7 miles I found myself being overtaken by a tractor as I crested the top and was stuck behind him doing 30 mph down the other side whilst I wanted to go faster. Fortunately he turned off to the left before the next uphill and I was able to get back into my rhythm.
Approaching the turn I saw first Kyle (who I guessed was probably up on me) and then Dave (who I guessed might be down on me). Cleanly around the turn, the return leg proved not to be as wind assisted as might have been hoped. Through Belsay I could see my average speed was steadily rising and I gave it everything over the last couple of miles to try to bring it up to 25 mph. It was very close, but I just missed out with 1:00:04. It was still my second best time on the club 25 course so very pleasing. Second place on the night behind Dave (59:31) and ahead of Kyle (1:00:07).
