My first time trial was an evening club time trial organised by Reading Cycling Club on 5th May 1992 on the H10/1R course at Aldermaston in Berkshire, and I rode on my standard road bike with clip-on tri bars, finishing with a time of 25:14.
More than 25 years later, I've now taken part in a large number of races, totalling over 10,000 miles of time trialling alone.
It is not as easy as it was to be motivated enough to put in the training required to get good results, and age is not on my side, but in 2018 I shall be trying to see what I can achieve with the latest technology and aerodynamic knowledge. Sadly I shall never know what times I could have recorded with the fitness I had then and the knowledge and equipment I have now!
My 25th consecutive ride in my favourite time trial event!
I decided straight after completing my 24th ride that I should try and mark my quarter century of riding this race, and what better way to do it than to try and set a personal best for the course. That seems like a crazy idea - in 1994 I was just 22 years old, weighed 68kg, took part in road racing, and was reasonably quick up hills. So what chance of competing with that now aged 47 and weighing 76kg?
